Our 2025 year in review

Our 2025 year in review

It's the season for year-end summaries, and we are no exception! It's great to look back on previous years, as it really shows the cumulative nature of our work: each day we try to make the product 1% better, and it's hard sometimes to see that 1% day-to-day, but over long periods of time, it's very clear. 2025 was full of advancements that we wish to highlight (plus our CEO - me - had a baby!)

The highlights of 2025

Staring in March, we introduced our second flagship bioreactor: the Pioreactor 40ml. This bioreactor doubled the size of our 20ml model and is currently our most popular model. The Pioreactor 40ml also introduced the new Vial Cap S and its poke-yoke design.

We moved offices in early Spring to a dedicated building a few blocks from our original office. This gave us lots of more space to build out our R&D and manufacturing facilities. It also has extra room we can later expand into. But the best part is: we added four massive raised garden beds in the back, and enjoyed fresh vegetables all summer. Note: we've added two more beds for next summer.

At year end, our print farm is now at 7 printers (we deprecated 3 older machines during the office move too). All our printers are Prusa printers, and we have been very happy with them. We also have printer space for more exotic ideas.

Pioreactor sponsored the CSM 2025 conference this year in June. It was great to be in Montreal (my favourite city) and meet hundreds of enthusiastic biologists and students.

In November, we released our latest bioreactor models: the Pioreactor v1.5! We are incredibly proud of the changes in v1.5, as they offer real improvements to optical density measurements, and provide a platform for future improvements. As always, you can purchase upgrade kits for your existing Pioreactors to bring them up to v1.5.

I can't end the article without talking about the many software improvements we've made over the past year. To highlight just a handful:

    • New calibrations design for easier editing and control
    • New OD calibration protocols
    • Create custom bioreactor models
    • Edit existing hardware parameters to go with your new custom bioreactor models
    • New dodging backend, and stirring can dodge OD readings
    • New MCP server for allowing AI agents to interact with your cluster
    • Updated experiment profile keywords (thank you!)

    What's next for 2026?

We have a new upgrade kit for the v1.5 coming out in the Q1 that will extend the capabilities of the Pioreactor, along with some new spectrometer and temperature plugins in Q2.

Thanks for being a part of this journey!
